Porcelain Tile FAQs
What are porcelain tiles?
Porcelain tiles are a man-made material, made from a dense mixture of sand, clay, and minerals, which is then baked at an incredibly high temperature. The finished result is a thin tile material that is non-porous and very hard-wearing..
Are porcelain tiles slippery?
SNot typically, but it depends on the finish. Polished porcelain has a high-gloss finish which means it doesn't have a slip rating, making it best suited for walls or lower-traffic floors. For an area that requires more grip, go for a matt porcelain tile which offers brilliant traction underfoot without compromising on style.
Do porcelain tiles need sealing?
No, one of the main perks of porcelain is that it’s non-porous and doesn’t need sealing. The only exception here is polished porcelain, which we do recommend giving a single seal during installation, in order to protect the surface from grout residue.
How thick are porcelain floor tiles?
Most porcelain floor tiles range from around 8mm to 11mm thick, but most typically 9mm. Outdoor porcelain tiles are usually 20mm thick for extra durability.
Are porcelain tiles cold underfoot?
They can feel cool, especially on bare feet, however they work brilliantly with underfloor heating. In fact, porcelain holds and distributes heat really well, making it a smart, cosy option for modern homes.
Are porcelain tiles durable?
Yes, very. They are purpose-built to last. Porcelain is dense and tough, so it copes well with the knocks, spills and scrapes that come with everyday use. Whether it’s in a busy hallway or under a kitchen table, it holds up without fuss.
